Each summer several dental students have the opportunity to provide
badly needed dental care to the poor population of the Dominican
Republic. Under the direction of Dr. Frank Serio, they give up their
vacation to learn something about a different culture and themselves.
All return changed by the experience. Members of the Class of 1988
who participated were Mark Briner, Ngoc Chu, Christine Golis, Paul
Heese, Janet Levitas, Ronald Logan, Steven Regenstein, and Eduardo
Rodriquez.

The Gorgas Odontological Society was orgai^
as a student organization and Inter it was chan
honorary dental student society with scholarship as a b(
for admission. The Society is named after Dr. Ferdinanu ^.
Gorgas, a pioneer in dental education and a great
contributor to dental literature. It was with this idea of
perpetuating his name that the society adopted it.
The Society makes for its objective the furtherance of
dental knowledge by discussion and lectuKs: Gorgas is
comprised of Junior and Senior members iphose scholastic
endeavors have placed them in at least the top third of the\

Gamma Pi Delta was chartered in 1965 as an
honorary student dental organization with
scholarship and interest in the field of Prosthetic
Dentistry as a basis for admission. The
prestigious honor society requires maintenance
of at least a "B" average in the disciplines of
both Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics for
all four years of dental school.
This year Gamma Pi Delta held four meetings
at various restaurants in Baltimore. Special guest
speakers were present at each dumer with their
goals directed toward stimulating the creative
interest of prosthodontics in general dentistry.

ALPHA OMEGA
Alpha Omega is an international dental
fraternity founded in the early 19008. Since then it
has evolved to be a well-respected component of
the dental profession with members in the U.S.,
Canada, Europe, Israel, South Africa, London,
Mexico, and Australia. The fraternity is
represented by a triangle whose base is Judaism
and sides are fraternalisni and professionalism.
Zeta Mu, our local chapter, is fifty members
strong and is proud to have received past awards
for chapter efficiency. Our yearly calendar includes
many exciting social and professional events which
help to maintain a close relationship with our
Baltimore alumni chapter, participating together in
many professional and social forums.
All the members of the Alpha Omega wish the
Class of 1988 the best in health, happiness, and
success.

The Psi Omega Fraternity was founded at the
Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1892 by
four members of the graduating class of 1894.
The Alpha Chapter at the University of Maryland
as it is known today strives to continue in the
pursuit at the basic concept of the Fraternity's
beginning ninety-three years ago — to offer a
stimulating source of diversion from the many
hours of dental education spent in the classroom,
laboratory and clinic. Psi Omega extends a
welcome means of relaxation and social
fraternalism to members all dental and dental
hygiene classes as well as alumni at Maryland.

probably right — we are! The fact is that you may not know who or what
we are. Let's face it — we are just a tired yet restless crowd seeking some
reUef from the turmoil we encounter each and every day .The best of times
are spent in the company of a fellow Zipper,and we give all we can to make
the best of what we have. We continue to strive to improve ourselves as-
dentists and professionals and have fun doing it. We are all proud of bear

STUDENT NATIONAL
DENTAL ASSOCIATION
The Student National Association is the
student afiUnate of the National Dental As-
sociation and fosters the same feelings of
fellowship, friendship, and camaraderie
among black dental students. Its corner-
stone is to promote and encourage minority
enrollment in all dental schools, improve
dental health care delivery to all disadvan-
taged people, and promote a viable aca-
demic and social environment conducive to
the mental health and well-being of mi-
nority students.

women were not eligible to join the ADA.
Today the AAWD meets concurrently with
the ADA. There are about 1000 national
members, 48 of which are here at the Uni-
versity of Maryland Dental School Chapter.

STUDENT AMERICAN DENTAL
HYGIENISTS' ASSOCIATION
SADHA is the dental hygiene students' professional
organization. As members of this organization we hope to
gain an understanding of our profession and our role in
the communities we will serve. Our goal this year was to
become recognized in the Dental School, as well as on the
UMAB campus. To reach this goal we became involved in
different activities, such as revising our Constitution and
Bylaws, forming a dental hygiene liaison program with
dental students, and participating in the USGA. SADHA is
also involved with community/public health activities,
fundraising, spring banquet plans and professional
growth.
Student participation in SADHA insures that the Uni-
versity of Maryland Dental Hygiene program graduates
will be active and vital participants of the dental health
care team and their local American Dental Hygienists'
Association.

The Christian Dental Asso-
ciation is a newly founded
chapter of the Christian Med-
ical Society. Although new,
we are a rapidly growing or-
ganization open to all mem-
bers of the BCDS community.
We plan to provide students
with opportunities in the
areas of community and
world outreach, guest lec-
tures, and Bible study, as well
as forming a network be-
tween practicing Christian
dentists and dental students.

STUDENT RESEARCH GROUP
The Student Research Group has re-
cently been organized to facilitate the fol-
lowing:
1. Promote accessibility for students to
current research projects.
2. Enhance and promote student exposure
to the career opportunities and expe-
riences in dental research.
3. Sponsor independent research projects
with the assistance of the Faculty Coun-
cil Committee on Research.
4. When possible, send a student repre-
sentative to the National Student Re-
search Group annual meeting in con-
junction with the lADR annual meeting.
Active support of this new and exciting
organization will allow BCDS to move
among the leaders in student based and
assisted research.

PRESIDENT
We entered ihis iiistilulion in hopes ofacquirinji; ihe skills
and knowledge of the exactinf^ profession of dentistry. But,
as slntlenls, many of us feel victinii/.ed Ity cireumslances,
policies, an<l personalities. Unfortunately, yet understand-
ably, apathy runs proportionately to the level of frustration.
It is the purpose of the Student Dental Association to work
within the administration to make these frustrations which
are inherent within the School more bearable. I would like
to believe that we have succeeded to some degree during his
past year. I hope that as alumni we will, as a group, continue
to seek productive changes for those who follow.
The SDA hopes thai each graduate will leave with many
lasting friendships, some fond memories, and the commit-
ment to excellence in dentistry.

PRESIDENT
The opportunity to write this has seemed a long timie in
coming; many times longer than four years. In retrospect,
however, the time has slipped by. What we didn't know then
but do know now is tremendous. What we couldn't do before
but can do now is a privilege.
We have taken a great step in realizing our life goals. We
should not forget that which has allowed us to make this
stride: dedication to the cause, the resiliency to be per-
sistent, and an objective worthy of this great effort.
Along the way we have forged friendships and shared
more than a laugh or two. We have shared an experience
which only those who have lived it can appreciate. In that
respect, we have traveled together. What we bring to the
profession is the differing talent each of us possesses. In a
crazy way its been fun. For most of us it will remain that
singular event that shapes the rest of our lives.

The purpose of any yearbook is to attempt to capture in
words and pictures, the years we have spent in school.
The two most important aspects of a yearbook are
THEME (the "feel") and DESIGN (the "look") — which
both refer to the unifying characteristics which give the
yearbook continuity. I believe it was me who once said,
"A picture is worth a thousand words," so I squeezed in
many pictures on every page throughout the book; es-
pecially of seniors, for it is the seniors for which this
edition of The MIRROR is made.
Wlierever you go, whatever you do, there will be prob-
lems to ovecome and people you don't like. This thought
helps me to put away the negative experiences and re-
member all the positive experiences of dental school. The
past four years have been very rewarding both in den-
tistry and more importantly with the relationships I have
made with my friends. I hope The 1988 MIRROR is a
positive reflection of everyone's experiences and that it
holds fond memories for everyone. Good luck to the Class
of '88.
